8 Days in Paris

My wife and I will be visiting our daughter on her spring break in April during her semester in Paris;first time for all of us.So here%26#39;s the usual question. Since, we will be flying in and out of Paris, where should we spend a few days away from Paris? We appreciate art, history, culture over simple relaxation ( due to our short time)Thanks for any suggestions..

There are several possibilities for you, but since you%26#39;re flying into and out of Paris, have you considered just doing day trips rather than pack up all your things, move to a different location, then pack up again to return to Paris? You would definitely want to return to Paris the day before your flight in the event of a transportation strike or something else. You%26#39;ll want time for Plan B, and if you wait until the day of your flight to go back to Paris, you may miss it. Even if you%26#39;re driving, you could run into issues. We actually had this problem last year and due to a transportation strike we missed our Air France flight which caused us to pay almost $1,000 in penalties since AF was not at fault (and didn%26#39;t care to work with us). There was also absolutely no availability of flights the next day, so we ended up having to pay for 2 extra nights in a hotel, and miss two extra days of work. Overall we calculated that this strike ended up costing us about $2,000. That%26#39;s certainly not the norm, but it can happen.

There are several nice day trips from Paris that you may enjoy including Reims (the Champagne Region), Versailles and Giverny.

If you really want to spend a couple of nights away, consider the Loire Valley. There%26#39;s a forum where you can post specific questions for that area.

Enjoy your first time! You%26#39;ll fall in love with it!

I have lived here for years now and I have yet to see a majority of the museums or even tried all the restaurants in my immediate neighborhood. If your daughter is anything like I was, she%26#39;ll be dying to show you %26quot;her%26quot; Paris and you won%26#39;t have much time for elsewhere. If you do want to get away, an overnight to Amsterdam is a great side trip. The museums their are extra-ordinary and (Van Gogh, Anne Frank, of the Tropics...) and without cars it is a relaxing city to visit. Easy to get there by train.

Short story to share. Last year, we did a 3 week trip to Europe with our Daughter and son-in-law. My husband %26amp; I hadn%26#39;t been to Paris in 9 years. We flew in to Paris and out of Munich. We tried to no avail to spend more time in Paris, but the %26quot;kids%26quot; would only go for 4 nights...Son-in-law didn%26#39;t think he%26#39;d like it.

We had a wonderful trip. Paris being the highlight. Guess where the four of us are going for our week in May of 08...PARIS...

The kids loved it so much, they asked us if we%26#39;d like to do a week in 08...and we are biting our tongue to not say %26quot;told you%26quot;. There is SO much to see and do there. We ARE going to do one day trip to Versaille.

Why wear yourselves out???

I%26#39;ll be in France for 10 days. Decided that upon arrival we%26#39;ll take 3 days in Normandy (Bayeux), going by train from Gare St. Lazare in Paris.

I%26#39;m a WWII nut so I%26#39;m itching to see the beachheads and see battle sites, museums and cemeteries. Bayeux looks like a pretty little town, too.

But I wouldn%26#39;t worry about spending 8 days in Paris. No shortage of things to do, history/culture to soak up it seems.

If you can, fly into and out of London and take the Eurostar train to Paris. That gives you sometime in London and the train to Paris prevents the hassle of air travel into CDG. Do not spend days away from Paris on your first trip. Save that for next time. And there will be a next time. Paris will hook you forevermore. I cannot tell you how much Paris will invade your senses. This from a bumpkin from KS who never, ever, thought anyplace would invade to such an extent. My wife and I have been to Bali, Hong Kong, Singapore, Budapest, Vancouver BC, Cape Town, and more. We really like all of those places; we love Paris....

You will too....

Thank you all for the responses. Although we were first thinking of 3 or 4 days in Paris, based on the replies we%26#39;re leaning toward day trips only and staying the whole time in Paris; however, our daughter has mentioned that after showing us Paris she wouldn%26#39;t mind getting away for a day or two on her break to another city or town. Maybe we%26#39;ll try a one night stay somewhere relatively close. Thanks again for the feedback.
