Trip to Cannes

I%26#39;ll be in Cannes from January 24 until Feb 1, 2008. Would like inexpensive eateries, museums that are free, and must do%26#39;s if you come that far. We love shopping at thrift shops or consignment shops so is there any in the Cannes area? And are the signs along the road in English and French in case I rent a car and cannot speak any French. Thanks.

You%26#39;ll be in Cannes for the MIDEM conference so some of the fixed price set menus may go up in price, but we usually find these are the least expensive. It also depends how you define inexpensive, and what depths the dollar descends to!

Most restaurants have their menus (often with english translations) and prices displayed outside , so you can browse and find one that appeals to you. Eating at lunchtime is always better value than in the evening .Avoid the Croisette.

L%26#39;Ardoise restaurant ,on rue Rouguiere ,off the rue d%26#39;Antibes at the port end has some good prices. Aux Bons Enfants on rue Meynadier is good and not expensive. A lot of people recommend Pizza Cresci at the old port, but we prefer Chez Xavier on rue Marceau near the Gambetta market if you want a pizza or steak. The restaurants on rue Pasteur are worth looking at as are those in the enclave round rue Freres Pradignac

There are several good value cafes on and around rue Hoche, the other side of the Gambetta market from Chez Xavier but these may not be open in the evening.

Au Grain de Sel at the top of the restaurant street rue St Antoine is not expensive.

For shopping, the Gambetta Market which is open every morning except Monday might be worth a look. There is a bric a brac market by the old port at weekends and a Monday moring market in the Forville market .Rue Meynadier is worth a wander.Thrift shops in Cannes tend to be of the designer variety and not cheap. There is one on the rond point Duboys Angers, just off the Croisette that I can think of. Sales should still be on in the general shops.

The Malmaison museum on the Croisette is free and you can walk up to the Musee de Castre at the top of Le Suquet the old town - definitely worth doing but don%26#39;t think getting in will be free while you are there.

Also suggest taking the ferry to the Isles de Lerins from the old port .Ste Margeurite houses the museum where the Man in the Iron Mask was held- again probably not free while you%26#39;re there though.

Le Cannet up the hill a suburb of Cannes is worth visiting, a quick bus ride or long walk . Great views and interesting little shops and restaurants.

If you%26#39;re hiring a car, a drive along the coast all the way to Monaco or even Menton via the Cap d%26#39;Antibes and Cap Ferrat is a must do,with a detour to Eze village on one leg. A drive west towards St Raphael in the other direction is spectacular. Road signs will be french only, but if you brush up on a few quirks of french law you should be OK .

You will have to pay to park it in Cannes and other towns you visit and driving distracts from the views , but it would be quicker and easier to cover bigger distances at the time of year you are travelling.

Public transport is cheap and easy.

Antibes (1 euro each way by bus) is a short journey and worth doing.

The train takes you to Ventimiglia in Italy - there is a Friday market there which might interest you and you could stop off at Monaco and Villefranche on the way back.

Nice by bus is only 1 euro too but the journey is 1 and a half hours. The train is quicker but more expensive but the station isn%26#39;t so handy for the area of ineterest. To visit Nice, you need the best part of a day if you%26#39;re going to see anything.

Have a great trip
