Disabled in Paris

I%26#39;m going to Paris with my partner in April and my hip has packed up (early arthritis - damn!). So I%26#39;ll be %26#39;walking%26#39; roung gay Paree leaning heavily on my walking stick.

Staying in a flat in St Germain des Pres.

OK - anyone got any good tips etc for getting around in these circumstances? I am so used to hopping on and off buses and metros or walking everywhere....

For a start - the best way to get from Paris CDG to St Germain. Taxi? And an idea of the cost?

BTW I speak reasonable French si c%26#39;est necessaire.

You coudl taxi CDG to hotel, depending on time of day and traffic etc could run 45-65 euros.

Or you could take the RER into Paris then taxi ( RER is about 9 euros ) .

Buses are best for disabled, metros stations can have long corridors and mamy steps.

Many posts on this board regarding impaired mobility issues, many have done Paris, canes, wheelchairs , even recovering from major illnessses so there are many good tips. Enter words like %26quot; disabled%26#39; %26quot;mobility %26quot; etc into search box on left hand side of page for lots of good reading.

PS . Hey no one needs good hips to enjoy a glass of wine or a good cafe creme while sitting at a pretty cafe , so go and do what you can and have fun!!

hi there bionic,

i am here in %26quot;gay paris%26quot; now and have major mobility issues (cane/wheelchair). if you can, plan ahead of time, and STAY OFF THE METRO even with a cane! ( i just had to try it, even after all the TA advice against it!), good %26#39;ole joan1 is very correct in advising the bus. just be mindful of the %26quot;direction%26quot; the bus is going, not necessarily the route name. BIG DIFFERENCE, and very important...we found out the hard way, and with a wheelchair in tow, :O lol!! i recommend getting a %26quot;carnet%26quot; or book of bus tickets, 10 i think to start off.

early arthritis, huh? sorry. when do you plan on coming? soon? if so, the weather is cold and damp now. not good for those bones or muscles (you use them more to compensate).and there%26#39;s lots of walking. bring a heating pad if you can (and a converter of course! :))

hope this info helps!

You can get from CDG to the city on the Roissy bus. Catch it outside the terminal. It goes to the Opera Garnier on rue Scribe. Get off there and taxi to your hotel. Consider day tours with Cityrama and Paris Visions both located on the rue de Rivoli in the vicinity of the Louvre. Busis ceap--don%26#39;t know about taxis but they%26#39;re pretty expensive if you take them all the way from CDG.

One of the best things we did was to get on the hop on/off Seine boats from the Eifel

Tower. Granted, they don%26#39;t start until 10 AM but we used them for 2 days, 15 E, or one day 12E and thought they were worth the money. Sometimes the landings required someone to navigate somehe ET opens in winter at 9:30AM. The ET opens at 9:30am in winter but April is aonther issue.

Hi,

This past trip, I used the Yellow Van Shuttle (17 euros per person including bags, not tip) for CDG to our hotel. They gave great directions on how to call from free from baggage. Tney were at the assigned door with 10 minutes. We used them for an early morning return to the airport with no problems.

In the past, we have taken the taxi into Paris. However, traffic and delays can really cause the cost to climb to 60 euros.

I took my Mom to Paris when she was using a cane prior to knee surgery. Please remember to schedule some quiet, rest times so that you do not over stress your body.
