Hi there

On my www.winetravelguides.com site, the Loire-expert and wine writer Jim Budd recommends the following that might suit your budget/interests:

Grand Hotel de Nantes (http://www.grandhotel-nantes.com/)

For your restaurant try:

La Cigale (www.cigale.com). This is what Jim writes:

%26quot;One of the city’s institutions Le Cigale brasserie opened in 1895 and is famous for its art nouveau décor, in particular the tiles. It specialises in seafood. Not the best food in Nantes, but worth a visit for the décor and the atmosphere.%26quot; Prices are reasonable.

Apart from obvious historical/arty things to see, there%26#39;s one really unusual thing to see that opened last summer: %26quot;Machines of the Isle of Nantes%26quot; ... %26quot;Based in the site of the old shipyards on Ile de Nantes, the first part of this exhibition of fantastic machines opened at the end of June 2007. For the moment a moving giant elephant, 12 metres high, is the centrepiece. You can visit the factory or pick up a ‘ride’ on the elephant at certain times. Contact them in advance or check the website. Other machines are due to be built. Take Tramway 1 that passes the main railway station and the château and get off at Chantiers Navals.%26quot; The website is only in French but it%26#39;s http://www.lesmachines-nantes.fr/

Hope this helps - don%26#39;t forget to drink some good Muscadet sur Lie with fresh seafood.

I%26#39;ve just come back from Nantes with my 11 year old son, not a romantic couple of days obviously but we had a good look around.

For a hotel, we stayed at the Pommereye and very good it was too. Great location in the town centre, cosy, friendly and nice decor. For food, La Cigalle is a must. It%26#39;s not the cheapest but you must go. We went for lunch and the tourist info. advised to book so if you plan to go book ahead. As for prices, like most French restaurants you can pay as much or as little as you wish depending on what you have but put some money aside 100euros for 2 with wine and 3 courses but you could pay less.

Because of the time of year we were mainly looking at inside stuff, but the Castle is worth a look. Les Machines was closed unfortunately as was the Nat History museum. I%26#39;m sure some of the wine trips would be of interest.

The tram system is great, the town is nice and compact with some good shops and I%26#39;m sure in summer you%26#39;ll have a good time.

Hello,

I hope you%26#39;ll have fun on your week-end. Sounds nice.

For the accomodation, I would advise you too the Hotel Pommeraye (in the very city center) http://www.hotel-pommeraye.com/

L%26#39;Hotel (near the castle)http://www.nanteshotel.com/

L%26#39;hôtel des Colonies (very central too) http://www.hoteldescolonies.fr/

If you want a more %26quot;budget%26quot; basis and still very central location : L%26#39;hôtel du Tourisme, L%26#39;hôtel Saint Daniel or L%26#39;hôtel Duquesne. It%26#39;s more basic but location is excellent.

For things to do :

You will have plenty to do in a week-end. But if you want to do something special and different with Nantes people, I would advise you to ask the Greeters. Nantes Greeters will propose to make you discover a district, an activity, wine tasting... anything according to your tastes and wishes. It%26#39;s totally free. You just have to fill a form on their website. It%26#39;s exactly the same priciple as New York greeters. They can propose the visit in English or French, you decide. http://www.greeters-nantes.com/

Otherwise, you will need to see the elephant and the Machines de l%26#39;Ile. It%26#39;s magic. A bit further, at %26quot;Le Hangar à bananes%26quot; you have plenty of bars and a center of contemporay art with regular exhibition. It%26#39;s next to the Loire river. In June, if the weather is good, it can be very nice and relaxing.

Another great great visist : take the little boat to see the little village of Trentemoult. It%26#39;s on the other side of the Loire, just at 10 minutes of Nantes center and it%26#39;s really lovely (fishermen%26#39;s village). Boat ticket is cheap.

You can also visit Talensac market in the morning and walk along the Erdre river.

You%26#39;ll have to visit the castle, the passage Pommeraye and the Cathedral. It%26#39;s classic but nice.

For restaurants, tell me more about what you like. La Cigale is great I agree. And not that expensive. A bit noisy since it%26#39;s a brasserie. If you want some more romantic ideas, I may have great adresses for you.

Please, don%26#39;t hesitate to ask any further question. I live in Nantes so it%26#39;s easier for me.

Cheers
