So I promised myself I was going to stick with ONE country this time. Now here I go vascilating again. So here was the plan: Six days in a hotel in Paris and Six days in a rental house somewhere in France. I just went through some pics of last year%26#39;s trip, unfortunately, and now I want to add in Varenna in Lake Como or somewhere in that region. Can anyone help me out here? Are there areas in France with that kind of scenery so I can stay in France and maybe go 6/Paris, 3/French Countryside with wine tasting, and 4/some beautiful, waterside location?? Also we are thinking of switching to an apartment rental in Paris and B%26amp;Bs for the rest of our stays. We have not decided on car or train or both. Thanks for any and ALL help or pointers or advice!! (oh, BTW, we can go from 14-18 days.)

Top of the list for a lakeside town is probably Annecy http://www.lac-annecy.com/index_gb.php which is well-placed to explore that part of the Alps - there is lots more information on the regional tourist site: http://www.tourism.savoiehautesavoie.com/
There are other places with lakes and wonderful surrounding countryside - the Jura and the Vosges (Gerardmer) are a couple we%26#39;ve enjoyed, especially being able to explore Alsace and its vineyards from Gerardmer, though I think Annecy would be my own top choice.

Hi,
I would second Annecy as a great location by a lake in France. It is a lovely old town and very scenic. We have spent several really good holidays there and have always enjoyed it and will go again. I think to get the most out of the area you need to have a car there, if you want to go on the mountain roads and see the scenery. You don%26#39;t say when you are coming to France but it does get very crowded in the summer - I would say that is the only drawback.
Varenna is also a nice town, we stayed there about 4 years ago for a few nights but it is very small, I don%26#39;t know if you may be looking for something a bit bigger. However it does have a good boat service to other parts of the lake and we spent a few days taking the boat to the other little towns, all very nice with lovely Italian food. When we went we travelled from Paris by TGV to Milan, then train to Como and then boat to Varenna, it was very easy to get there without a car and I think it was better to avoid the long drive. We stayed in a really nice small hotel overlooking the lake, sorry I can%26#39;t remember the name of it offhand but if you are interested I could find it - just don%26#39;t have the time at the moment.
Hope this is helpful

Geradmer is indeed a pretty lakeside place, well situated for exploring the delightful countryside of Alsace - and up onto the challenging Route Des Cretes, as well as the vineyards.

Thank you for your opinions and help! This is exactly the kind of guidance I was looking for! Thanks again!!
