cafe flore

My husband and I were watching Ina Garten (the Barefoot Contessa) on her show on t.v. She was doing a show on Paris. Ina and her husband Jeffery went to cafe flore and just loved it. Does anyone know where it is? I thought she said the left bank, but I am not sure. Thank you.

You just have to follow the footsteps of Hemingway...

Hi Pipster,

Cafe Flore is in the heart of the 6th arrondissement alolng Blvd St Germain, which is on the left bank (ie south of the Seine). My husband and I have just returned from a trip to Paris and went there for lunch over the weekend. It is very popular with locals and tourists and prices are quite high. However it really does give you an idea of Parisian cafe life, lots of noise, people talking, eating, drinking and really enjoying themselves. The food was great and they do really good wine by the glass. Definitely worth a visit!

Le CAFÉ de FLORE--172 Blvd. Saint Germain (at: rue Saint Benoit..just down the block from another Parisian %26#39;institution%26#39;, Café Les Deux Magots) 75006, Metro: Saint Germain des Prés--

I think that they only recently re-openned after a major renovation.

I%26#39;m currently reading the book, Paris to the Moon, by Adam Gopnik, and just last night happened to read the chapter %26quot;A Tale of Two Cafes,%26quot; which tells the long history of the Cafe de Flore and Les Deux Magots next door. It was interesting to read about how the Flore became the %26quot;in%26quot; place to go while the popularity of Deau Magots faded.

Of course, I%26#39;d love the chance to go to either one!

Since both cafes are next to each other, I was confronted with the difficult choice of which one to enter for a lunch-break. I ended up choosing Cafe Les Deux Magots, and surprisingly, it was practically empty at that hour. I had a very relaxing lunch and enjoyed a nice quiche, though I must admit that I didn%26#39;t find it tastier than any of the other quiches that I had eaten in less expensive places.

I decided not to eat at these places. Better to enjoy a cafe creme instead and make a pleasant few hours out of sitting outdoors, people watching and chatting with friends as do the Parisians. Drinks are expensive - I think it was like 11E for a drink at night at a cafe on boul. St.Germain des Pres however, these outdoor cafes are packed and very popular at night.

If you are at Les Deux Magots and there are no tables on the street or if it seems too expensive, there is the Cafe Bonaparte 1/2 block away from the Blvd St Germain which is usually less crowded.

Dear Pipster37,

I usually splurge and have a drink or light meal at Cafe de Flore. IMO, it%26#39;s worth the splurge, because I often spend a good hour or more there soaking up the atmosphere. I can definitely recommend the hot chocolate and salads. After I%26#39;m done, I pop around the corner and buy souvenirs from the Cafe de Flore%26#39;s gift shop.

I%26#39;ve also enjoyed a drink at the Deux Magots at one of their outside tables overlooking the church.

Enjoy!

Pipster37: I have seen that episode of Ina and Jeffrey about 10 times now. Everytime I see it I squeal with delight. I have gone to cafe flore specifically because Ina and Jeffrey went there. However, instead of getting an omlette (which Ina and Jeffrey love) I got quiche. I feel so special when I go there. Who knows--maybe sometime you or I will bump into Ina and Jeffrey! I figure if the place is good enough for them, it is definitely good enough for me!

Do you have Ina%26#39;s Barefoot in Paris cookbook? It is so wonderful. I really recommend it. Try the baked herbed eggs. Actually, try anything in there. All of her recipes are good.
