Stairs + elevator to reduce Eiffel Tower wait?

I%26#39;m looking for ways to reduce time spent waiting in line at the Eiffel Tower. I%26#39;ve read past threads and some guidebooks.

From what I gather it%26#39;s best to go at night. However, I%26#39;d like to go during the day.

Is the best option to walk up to the second level and take the elevator from there? (I assume it%26#39;s a different eleator from the one that starts at the ground)

And how does the cost compare?

And finally, if you use the second-floor elevator to get to the top level, do you use a different elevator to go down? And does it stop at the second level? (so that I could spend more time there if I wanted to before heading down the steps)

Also, I%26#39;ll be there March 3-8. Will that mean anything to the length of queues at the tower?

We found out when the lifts and the rest of the ET opened when we went to Paris just prior to Christmas. You can do the same on their ET website. We arrived one hour before the stated time of opening and were in line for about an hour, reading the newspaper, sipping coffee, and generally greeting the other people lining up--from Istanbul, Abu Dabai, Karthoum, Mumbai, Sydney, --where else can you get a chance to converse with such people? We were first up to the top and stopped on the way down at the post office and Altitude 95 to coffee up and send some postcards.

Go an hour ahead of the opening time and go right up to the top, take the pictures you want and the go to other sights. The first elevator goes to the second level at which time you must step around to the second elevator that goes to the top. Staff will direct you.

Be the first to the top.

My 14 yr old son and I went in August 06 , we arrived sometime around 10,, and the lines were LONG already, at least 1 1/2 hours we were told, so we saw a shorter line. The stairs. We waited about 20 minutes.

We walked up to second level, poked around, and noticed line to top wasn%26#39;t bad at all( yes, it was a different elevator). I didn%26#39;t want to go to top as I have done it before , and on a hazy summer day the view isn%26#39;t any better from the top anyways. So son went up . He then returned to second level where I was waiting and then we both took elevator down.

This past July I was there with a friend, line looked long all the time !

Difference in cost stairs versus elevator, I am not sure exactly, yes it was a bit cheaper but I never pay much attention to prices when I know I am going to do the site anyways, its not like I would travel thousands of miles and then say %26quot; 10 euros, forget it%26quot; LOL

We went during the day on Saturday after Christmas, and all the lines were huge. The stairs line was maybe a little shorter (still took over an hour), but once you got through the line there was no wait. I would guess getting there just before opening or in the evening (after 8) would be the least crowded.

You save 3.80E by walking to the 2nd floor.
