Best town for holiday with 13 year old

My husband, myself and my 12 year old son are planning a holiday to South of France the last 2 weeks of August. We will stay in self catering accommodation or mobile home but are unsure of the best town to stay in. With 1 child we need to be able to keep him amused so we thought being near the Spanish border we could go into Spain, walk in the Pyrenees, visit Perpignan, Carcassonne and Collioure and do a few days at the beach as well. I%26#39;ve done some research into St Cyprien, Banyuls and Collioure but not sure where would be best to stay. Don%26#39;t mind being 15 minutes from the coast as we will have a car. Plan to fly from Luton to Girona.

Thanks.

Have a think about staying at Canet Plage.

Excellent campsite there:

Perfect place for your son and very relaxing site for you. Connections to the rest of the region are very good. We have stayed there several times when our children were 13-18 years and I can recommend it without any hesitation.

If you have not been then you will find Collioure is beautiful and the pick of the coastal towns.

The others on that stretch of coast - Canet included - are built a bit more with the tourist in mind.

You cant go wrong in this area - lots to see and do and the people are very friendly - one of our very favourite regions of France.

Dear Neal,

Many thanks for your quick response. Will now go and do research on Canet Plage.

Since you don%26#39;t mind being a few km from the coast, you could look in the area going from Le Boulou to Argeles. There are several villages with lots of interesting things to do.

Palau del Vidre : glass blowers

Sorède : tortoise farm - whip factory - horseriding

Saint-André : a farm with 300 animals, poney rides for kids

Argelès : canyoning park - forest trail - Park at Valmy (birds of prey).

In Saint Cyprien there is a big Aquapark.

I also suggest Argelès or Sr Cyprien ...

I stayed in St. Cyprien two years ago and have to say I didn%26#39;t like it at all. The town itself is so not French. There were no decent restaurants and it completely lacked atmosphere. To be honest I hated the place. Luckily we did have a car so we used to travel to Collioure most days and did a lot of day trips from St. Cyrpien. Banyuls is also another lovely village on the coast. We visited a lovely village in the Pyrenees called Ceret which I would recommend. If I were you I think it would be much nicer to find a place in and around Collioure and use it as your base and then do day trips out from there. Collioure has lots of atmosphere little winding cobble streets with plenty of good restaurants and small shops. Just to let you know it will be very very busy down that part of France in August - so be prepared for that and also quite hot.

what are you talking about LouR, there is a excellent restaurant at St Cyprien called LA LAGUNE

and one more thing, with a 13 year old Argelès or St Cyprien is more convenient than Collioure ...

|||

there is a excellent restaurant at St Cyprien called LA LAGUNE

....... and L%26#39;Almandin as well !

Response to Philpetrus - compared to Collioure the selection of restaurants in St. Cyprien are very few and that%26#39;s my opinion. I have travelled a lot throughout France and St. Cyrpien was one of my least favorite places to visit.

yes i totally agree with you and i don%26#39;t like the whole coast from La Grande Motte to Argelès ... and Collioure is a very nice town, but not a place for fun ...

Yes, I agree with you there, insofar as Collioure is very much a place to go for a nice meal, stroll around the town at night and take in the atmosphere. We used to go into Argeles for the fun things for my daughter who was 13 at the time as I found there was more to do there for her than St. Cyprien. There is a great adventure centre there where the girls went canyoning etc. Having said that I feel more kids of 12/13 love the sea and can spend endless hours enjoying themselves swimming etc.
