Luggage on Thalys train

My suitcase is already considerably heavier than it was when I arrived in Paris - mainly books given to me by people I have had meetings with while I%26#39;m here.

What is the procedure with bags on the Thalys train - do you just keep them by your seat; are there steps up to the carriage that need to be negotiated, etc?

I read something in another thread about a %26quot;luggage rack%26quot; - if this was something I had to lift it into, there is absolutely no way I%26#39;d be able to do that.

Grateful for any information you can give me.

Once I get to Brussels I%26#39;m going to have to do some serious repacking and post some stuff back to Oz and on to Nice, because I%26#39;ve got two Easyjet flights ahead and I know that even a gram or two over the 20kg limit will mean my low-cost will suddenly become rather expensive.

There are often steps to get up and down in the station - escalators often out of order - so make sure you have plenty of time to get to the platform - you may have to cart the suitcase up and down steps. Then there are steps up into the train itself. When we used trains in 2007 there was a variety of carriage configurations - some you had a little compartment (with a door and seats inside) - then we had room to have the cases in with us (admittedly the train wasn%26#39;t very full). This was an easy situation. Other times you leave them at a luggage rack within your own carriage (as you walk on board and before you go along to your seat) - I was rather nervous about this, so we took a bycle lock thing, that we connected the cases together, or to a post in the luggage rack. I think I recall a luggage arrangement once, but you should be able to ask for some help! We found people very helpful. Have you got time to post the stuff back now?

Thanks - great help.

I%26#39;ll make sure I get there in plenty of time - I might even go to the Gare du Nord this afternoon and check out the stair situation.

I suppose I could post some stuff back today, but it will be easier to do it from Brussels if I can get it that far.

The Thalys has overhead luggage racks, and luggage storage racks on either side of each carriage (close to the doors - easy for you, but also for thieves!). You can also store luggage on the floor between some back-to-back seats.
