My husband and I are in our early stages of planning our trip to France. We will be going the the last few days of August (~28/29th) til Sep.8. We are pretty outdoorsy but also love museums and art. We can handle about 4 days in the city but then feel like we need to breath in a slower place area with athletic outdoorsy things to do. For example, after going to Rome- we loved doing the hikes in Cinque Terra (Italy).
We want to go to Paris for 4 days and do a bike tour one day while we are there. We are trying to decide what to do our other 4-5 days. We really want to go to the beach in the south of france for part of the time. We thought about going to the Alps and doing some hiking for a couple days as well. Can anyone comment on if it is feasible? From the looks of it to me it looks like it would take awhile to get to Chamonix. If the mountains are not very feasible, are there any other areas in the South of France that have athletic things to do other than walk. Also what would be some good home bases in South France (maybe 2 different places 2/3 nights each.
Should we start in South France and go north or start in Paris and fly out of Nice?
TIA.

For hiking in France%26#39;s outdoors, having a car to get around will make it very very feasible.
Start studying some Michelin Green guides at your local library, bookstore, etc. I love their summary maps at the beginning with different ratings for views, etc. That%26#39;s your ticket to finding clusters of hiking spots, etc. Study those and pick your spot according to your tastes.
You do know that the beaches on the South of France are not expansive sandy tropical paradise types? But south is a good direction to find great hiking. In any case, the Alps come right down on to the Riviera--Monaco. Yes, Nice is right there and a convenient international departure point.
For the South of France, look at the Green Guides for Pyrenees, Auvergne, Languedoc, Provence and the Alps in that order approaching Nice. Auvergne and Languedoc have some spectacular canyons. Pyrenees are where you%26#39;ll find Millau and the world%26#39;s highest bridge. That covers walking. What else? Bungee jumping?
