I%26#39;m just curious, what do most people take to the markets to carry their items in? I%26#39;d like to have something to put baguettes, cheese, etc in and wondered what most Parisians do...
Thanks!

its usually 1 of 2 bags
1) The classic, Kelly bag of shopping bags is the tan straw bag with short or longer tan leather handles. My childhood au pair had one when I lived with her family in 1976 and still has one now. They sell these on Rue Monteguiel for 1-3 euros - they%26#39;re $30 in NYC - the one I brought back from the Netherlands finally broke after 10 years, as soon as I got back from Paris - of course.
it sort of looks like the shape of an Italian Sfoiatelle pastry....
2) the hideously ugly large rectangular plaid bag wheeled cart. I know, its useful, and probably better if you%26#39;re doing major shopping, but whenever any Americans worry about what they should wear in Paris, I think of those ugly bags....

Thanks Evening -- appreciate your tips, I%26#39;ll definitely go for the classic look.

I bought the neatest bag at the Saxe-Breteuil market to carry all the %26quot;stuff%26quot; back to the apartment. It%26#39;s a coffee theme so lots of coffee cups, coffee beans, the Herald Tribune, etc., etc. Very fun and a great souvenir. Not sure if all markets sell these fun bags, however.

Just remember that %26quot;une bague%26quot; (pronounced exactly like the bag you%26#39;re looking for) in French is a ring, the kind that goes on your finger.
Or course, many French just put the little stuff in the plastic bag that the market provides and then carry the baguette bare-handed on their way home from work.

We bought fabulaous big, very strong plastic, colourful pattern all over, carry bags from SuperU supermarkets, in the SW of France. They are strong, and have canvas-type handles. In the town we lived in, the supermarkets did not have regualr carry bags, so everyone had many of these ones to put their shopping in. They are a great souvenier too (though I did also manage to get a Provencal traditional basket, as described above, all the way back to Australia). These plastic bags are quite alrge and have great designs in the patterns on them. I don%26#39;t know if Suoer U is in Paris, though.
