Advice on where to stay in Provence

Hi,

We are thinking of going to Provence in mid July for about 6 days for our honeymoon (or as we%26#39;d rather call it our mini-moon!). Initially we wanted to stay on the coast but after reading a number of reviews I%26#39;m a little nervous about the madding crowds so thinking it might be best to head inland? We can fly into Marseilles and go from there. Has anyone any recommendations as to where might be nice to stay as there seem to be so many possibilities. We would like somewhere nice with a pool so that we have the option to chill out and laze about; we would also like to be near somewhere with a few places to eat as well. We are happy to visit 2 different locations but no more than that.

Any tips/advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

Many thanks.

My group and I stayed 8 nights in a guesthouse/B%26amp;B in Pernes les Fontaines in the summer of 2006. (www.lelavandinprovence.com). It is a gorgeous property, swimming pool, lavender gardens, roses, hydrangeas, etc., etc. The owner is American so language no problem. There is a large terrace with table and umbrella where we dined several nights on goodies that we purchased at the various outdoor markets. Pernes les Fontaines is a charming town that boasts of 39 fountains!! It was probably a 5 - 10 minute drive from LeLavandin.

The towns/villages we visited were:

L%26#39;Isle sur la Sorgue (huge fabulous outdoor market on Sundays - get there by 8:30-9A so you can park close to the market). Lots of canals, water wheels, etc.

Bonnieux

Menerbes

Lumieres

Coustellet

Roussillon (gorgeous!!!)

Gordes

Abbaye de Senanque (for the lavender fields)

Went to see Pont du Gard

Vaison la Romaine

Crestet

Seguret (precious little perched village!)

Gigondas (for a wine tasting)

St. Remy

Cassis - on the Mediterannean -- the boat trip out into the calanques (tall limestone cliffs) was a highlight. The boats will drop you off at little hidden beaches and then pick you up later.

We found Pernes les Fontaines to be very central to the towns/villages we wanted to visit.

Rent the movie %26quot;A Good Year%26quot; with Russell Crowe to get an idea of the beauty you will be viewing!

Spend some time at your local bookstore looking at the Provence books. The DK Eyewitness books are my favorite as there are lots of color photographs of the villages/towns/etc.

Enjoy!

Everywhere%26#39;s going to be busy in July, but you might want to try Aix en Provence or near it? It%26#39;s very central so you could travel about it bit, and has great places to eat. Or St Remy, which I%26#39;m going to this year? Not cheap but very beautiful. I was in Apt last year for a couple of days and though it%26#39;s near the Luberon it was very quiet, felt very untouristy and the market there is said to be second to none. It%26#39;s about 7 miles from Roussillon which the previous poster recommended as being beautiful. NB if you want to stay somewhere quiet, you will need to have a car.

If you would like to be by the sea try Porquerolles, the island just off the end of the Giens peninsula by Hyeres. Although there will be loads of people there, there are virtually no cars but loads of cycle tracks. Everyone cycles or walks and it has great beaches. Then there%26#39;s Giens itself - five mile long sandy peninsula. There will be a lot of people about because it%26#39;s a holiday area but there are nearly all French people having their own holidays.
