Newfoundland memorial / Beaumont Hamel visit 2007

Greetings,

For my father%26#39;s 65th birthday, I%26#39;m planning a trip to visit the Newfoundland memorial for the Battle of the Somme / Beaumont Hamel.

Planning this trip for late April / early May 2007, in hopes for better prices and less crowds, and avoid summer heat. Short trip, like Thursday to a Monday.

We are both Newfoundlanders, and his cousin was killed there in that battle. I have not been to France before, but here is my basic itinerary:

- Fly to Paris (CDG)

- Rent a car from the airport

- Drive to a small town in the Beaumont Hamel area, and use it as a base. Such as Albert?

- Make day trips to the park.

- Check out other sites of interest within short driving distance.

Essentially, I%26#39;m seeking logistical advice:

- on a good town to use as a base which is affordable, and has decent lodging and amenities. My father is diabetic and has limitations, so need somewhere relatively convenient.

- Rent a cars - I%26#39;ve rented from auto-europe in the past, any recommendations for France?

- Any transportation alternatives from Paris? ie any trains from CDG to the area, and rental cars in the town?

Merci!

Hi,

Ok, getting there..you can get a train to Arras from CDG and then hire a car there, there are several near the station such as Avis, Europcar. You can also go to Picardie haut TGV and catch the shuttle bus into Amiens.

Arras would be better for Canadians as you have Vimy.

It is a 30 min drive from Newfoundland Memorial Park.

There are local English guides available and loads of B%26amp;B%26#39;s, lots of them are English owned.

I wouldn%26#39;t personally recommend any hotels in Albert, other than the Royal Picardie which is a bit pricey.

Beaumont Hamel guides are Canadian and free, but theres lots more to see in a 30 km radius.
