Cherbourg to Barfleur

Hello again - Thanks for the previous responses on what to do in Cherbourg for a day. NEW Question - how can I travel from Cherbourg to Barfleur?? I cannot find any information regarding a train or bus....... Barfleur sounds like a charming little town and a good place to spend the afternoon. Any suggestions ????? Thank you !

Hi I am not sure that there are any buses or public transport to Barfleur? yes its a charming little town but I think St. Vaast is much more interesting and if you have transport visit the two in an afternoon - I will try to find out if there is a bus service that runs there but these are quite isolated places unless you have your own transport - bear with me.

Hi, I have found some information which only confirms its possible to do this journey of 27 km, its very rural but there is a bus and the information can be found and telecharged (downloaded) by visiting www.mobi50.com and looking at Ligne 102 and 102a - this bus does%26#39;nt seem to run during the school holidays but by example the bus leaves Cherbourg train station at 12.05 and arrives at the Port, Barfleur 13.12 and there is another in the return direction at 18.35 arriving Cherbourg 19.25 I have no prices for this service and it would seem that after April through to July this service operates but when the schools and colleges close for summer they may issue a new timetable.

Barfleur is a very small place and I wonder if you might be stranded there for longer than you want. It is a very interesting rugged peice of coastline I wonder if you felt energetic if hiring cycles might be a better solution. Good Luck.

Normandiegirl - You are Wonderful !!! I appreciate the information very much. I don%26#39;t think the bus times will work out for me as the ship will sail earlier than the bus returns. I also appreciate the tip on visiting the other town you suggested. If I rent a car - do you think this is a better idea??? Please advise as to the driving conditions..........I%26#39;m a little worried about that as I have never driven in Europe before. Do you drive on the right or the left side of the road?

OR - do you think I should just stay in Cherbourg and make a day of it......... Thanks again!

If you decide to hire a car you could visit St Mere Eglise, the underground bunkers close by and the Utah Beach Museum.

Even if you are not interested in WW2 sites there are still some wonderful beaches and towns along both sides of the Cherbourg peninisula.

Bayeux is also less than an hour from Cherbourg along the N13. This is a two lane highway so not too difficult to drive. I have never know it to be too busy.

I may be wrong but you may also be able to get a train to Bayeux too.

Have a wonderful holiday

Hi Donna,

I am not sure exactly how long you have but the mileage from Cherbourg to Barfleur and on to St. Vaast la Hogue is around 48 miles return, the roads are not difficult to find mostly signposted and plenty of free maps from the Tourist information (office within the ferry terminal) and we do drive on the right apart from tractors who use all of the road.

Here is the website for Barfleur www.ville-barfleur.fr and for St. Vaast www.saint-vaast-reville.com and Cherbourg www.ville-cherbourg.fr

Hope this helps you decide with your time what you would like to see - there are plenty of buses from the ferry terminal into town then up to the big Auchan Hypermarche and shops, a large marina within the town and a shopping streets. Ferry terminal to town is not far especially as you will probably be moored that end of the port. Good Luck.

Hi. How would we go about getting a car to hire for the day from Cherbourg. I believe there are quiet a few of us who wish to go to the Normandy beaches from there. thank you. deb (donna, I hope I am not infringing on your post)

Hi Girls,

The closest car hire place in Cherbourg is about 500 m from the docking area of the ship - look on the two sites both have choice of English so should be easy to put in your dates and times.

www.hertz.fr and www.citer.fr both are well known companies.

If you are visiting Omaha and Utah on the day easiest is to fly straight along the N13 towards Caen and after 50 minutes leave this and turn towards Omaha Beach and head towards the American Cemetery at Colleville Sur Mer and its Visitor Centre you can then make your way back up to Utah Beach and visit the Museum and Visitor Centre up there - plenty of places serving a reasonable lunch from sandwiches to a sit down meal, think this will be about as much as is possible in a day even so you will have to stick to a schedule otherwise you will run short of time - If you want to consult the distances look on www.mappy.com.
