Hi
I am taking my mother to Paris in May and she will be 80. She can walk about a mile but does get tired. I have looked at alot of hotels on the site but am unsure which area to go for. Which is the easiest area to pick up the open top buses and also to go on a river cruise. Also for meals out and a safe area to walk in at night. I was going for a hotel in the Latin area, but unsure if the area around the Eiffel tower would be better. Please advise.
Thankyou

Hi,
If I were you I would go for around the Eiffel Tower rather than the Latin quarter, somewhere in the 8th or the 15th near the Champ de Mars. You can get the boats near there and the buses stop in front of the tower. It is a very safe area at night and you will find lots of nice restaurants around. It is a fairly residential area so there are lots of shops such as the patisseries etc., that she may enjoy having a look at as you walk around. Your Mum sounds like a youthful 80 year old but I think the Latin quarter may be too crowded, full of young noisy people and full of what I think of as overpriced touristy bars and restaurants, I wouldn%26#39;t stay in the area now although I have done a few years ago. (However, your Mum may like it!).
I would also avoid taking the metro too much, although your Mum sounds a very fit lady she may find all the stairs on the Metro very tiring, there are very few lifts or escalators - I would stick to getting around by bus most of the time. Buses that leave from the Tower will take you to many parts of Paris and it is a nicer way to see the city at the same time.
Hope this is helpful and you enjoy your trip

I would suggest somewhere in the Sixth because it%26#39;s a bit more central than the Eiffel Tower area. Somewhere around Blvd St Germain would be perfect for her - lots of cafes and bistros, very safe, lots of people around.

I agree with alisonfrance although we stayed in the 7th, about four blocks from the Eiffel Tower. We did use the hop on/off boats rather than the metro to get to the more distant sites like Notre Dame. We also walked a great deal but that may be out for your mom. Slowing down on a boat ride beats crowds and stairs on the metro in my opinion. Your mom will have no problem getting to most of the sites from the boats. There are plenty of neighborhood bistros, wine bars, and patisseries to explore including Rue Cler. Being within easy walking distance to the ET and Les Invalides was delightful. Walking along Rue Cler at night with the lighted ET as a backdrop was enchanting.

Thankyou for your advice so far I suspose you can%26#39;t recommend a cheaper 2 or 3 star hotel in the Eiffel Tower or Blvd St Germain area?
|||
When you say %26quot;cheaper%26quot;, can you give an idea of your budget per night (preferably in Euros but otherwise in $us).
Also, are you looking for two single rooms or will you share?
How long are you going for - maybe an appartment will suit you better.
Lots of questions, but all need answers so you get the best advice. :)

Thankyou for your reply. We are hoping to go end of May for 3 nights. There will be three of us my sister myself and my mother. We are looking to pay around 600- 700 euros for the three nights. I have just been offered a triple room at Hotel de Londres Eiffel, but am wondering if it will be big enough. Any advice very welcome. I was thinking of Hotel du College du France in the Latin Quarter, but advice seems to be that we would be happier in the Eiffel Tower Area.I want mum to enjoy herself as my father died a couple of months ago and that is why I want to get it right.

Hello,
We have chosen the Hotel Valadon in the Rue Cler area and are very excited about our choice. You may also want to inquire at the Hotel Relais Bosquet and Hotel Muguet. All three are near Rue Cler and have received great reviews on Tripadvisor. We have stayed in Rue Cler for several years and just love the neighborhood. Have a wonderful trip! I am sure it will be a wonderful memory for your family.

My mother will be 86 when we go again in May.
We went 2 years ago but she is pretty active.
We use the metro and as long as we don%26#39;t have to dash for a train, she has no problem navigating the stairs and passages.
It is true that one sees more from a bus but we find the metro is very efficient and avoids traffic delays.
you may be able to get some seniors discounts for some things.
I cannot persuade her to stay anywhere else except around Concorde/Tuilleries.
