Place to stay/to do near Saumur at the end of May

My partner and I are going to the Saumur 3 Day Equestrian Event at the end of May and had hoped to stay in the country for the following week.

Does anyone have any suggestions of places to stay/things to do within 1 or 2 hours travel from Saumur.

I am sure you realise that at Saumur you are on the Loire - an few hours travel would take you further inland (up river) to Tours - you could stay there, and go out to visit the famous Chateaux at Chenonceaux and Chambourd, and also Blois. You will be getting in to the main part of the wine producing areas too, although Saumur has it%26#39;s own very fine white, and Vineyard visits and tours will abound.

If the Loire does not suit you, and you want to head back homewards, then I would aim for Chartres, which has a grand and beautiful Cathederal to visit, and you could consider going on to Versailles (you could get there without having to go in to Paris.)

Some people like Le Mans, although I have never been there, so can%26#39;t comment, but you could go via here up to the Normandy Coast for the D day beaches. I recommend staying at Bayeux and seeing the fantastic Bayeux tapestry, or stay on the coast at Arromanches, view the Mulberry Harbour, then finally pootle along to Honfleur and spend a night or 2 there.

AHEM - I am hoping that you will be driving???

Thanks for those suggestions - my gut feeling had been to base ourselves in/near Tours and day-trip the area.

We will have a hire car which makes life easier.

Do you have any recommendations for hotels in the Tours area?

No, sorry, can%26#39;t help with that one, as I have only stayed in Saumur, and Blois, BUT here is a link to TA Tours pages, you should do OK there.
