train travel times.

Roughly, how long would it take to travel by train from Tours to Sarlat, not using TGV? We are coming from Australia in April/May.

Forever! Not only are the local trains very few and far between, the different lines often do not connect with one another.

The most sensible means by far is TGV Tours to Bordeaux then the local train to Sarlat, which is itself around a 3 hour journey - did it last year. There are usually seats available except on Fridays and Sundays.

I did figure out a journey on local trains, leaving Tours at 0900 via Chateauroux, Limoges, Perigueux and Le Buisson eventually arriving in Sarlat at 1603, that%26#39;s 4 changes of train and all sorts of ifs, ands, buts and excepts when looking at the days the trains do and do not run.

You could also go via Angouleme, Libourne and Perigueux.

Consult the website of www.ter-sncf.com and within that regional trains of Centre, Limousin, Poitou and Aquitaine Departments and you can download, print and pore over the timetables to your heart%26#39;s content.

They are in French only so get the dictionary out.

Have fun planning!

Unless you are determined not to drive, it would be much easier and faster to take the TGV to Bordeaux (or Liborne) and rent a car there, then take the toll road (A89) over to the area of Brive and local roads to Sarlat. Also, that would give you the opportunity to see some interesting sites along the way that you will miss if you are traveling only by train.

Hi Hobo33,

We too will be in Sarlat in May this year-may cross tracks. Can%26#39;t help withyoir directions but are curious if anyone can tell us how to get to Sarlat by train from Carcassonne.

Regards, Lynall

The simplest way would be Carcassonne - Bordeaux - Sarlat; the interesting and more scenic way would be Carcassonne - Agen - Le Buisson - Sarlat.

Caveats as above - local trains Agen - Le Buisson - Sarlat are somewhat rare creatures especially at weekends.
